Load Cell Care and Maintenance

Load cells have become integral to a variety of industries due to their ability to deliver accurate and reliable data. As a professional service provider with licensed companies in Malaysia, we (trained professional and weigh bridge installer) are please to share some Load Cell Care and Maintenance tips.

Understanding the Machanism of a Load Cell

The design of load cells ensures precision by making use of a beam, strain gauge, or another transducer that contains very fine metal components that are sensitive to the slightest change in weight loads.

Understanding the dos and don’ts when dealing with load cells is important for load cell care and load cell maintenance. This is to ensure the accuracy and longevity of these instruments.

Load Cell Care and Maintenance

Load Cell Maintenance / Preventive Maintenance (PM)

Regular preventive maintenance (PM) is essential to ensure that high accuracy load cells keep functioning correctly. PM should include wiring checks, calibration verification, and cleaning. Checking to wire helps ensure power is being supplied properly, and all connections are good so as not to cause false readings. Verifying calibration ensures that they produce valid output measurements while cleaning helps reduce the risk of environmental contaminants such as dust or other particles, compromising the accuracy of readings over time.

Load Cell Do’s and Don’ts

Load Cell Care – Do’s
1. Keep load cells away from moisture, extreme temperatures, corrosive chemicals, debris, UV rays, etc. The ideal environment for a load cell to function correctly should be within a temperature range between 40°F – 80°F (4°C-27°C), depending on its type and ambient conditions around it.

2. Avoid rough handling – fragile components inside a load cell may get damaged due to improper use or handling; this could lead to instability within its readings, meaning incorrect output data over time. Handle with extra care during installation and regular checkups

3. Check mounting surfaces regularly – both on your frame/platform where the load cell will rest upon as well as its own mounting surfaces – things like corrosion can affect how it performs over time, leading to potentially inaccurate readings if left unchecked or unattended for long periods

Load Cell Care – Don’ts
1. Never overload – Load cells usage MUST NOT be OVERLOADED. There are different capacities of load cell available from 10t, 15t, 20t, 25t, 30t, 35t, 40t, 50t to be used for the right weighing solution. Overloading your load cell beyond its capacity can permanently damage it affecting true strain gauge measurements and causing instability within its readings leading to inaccurately calculated output data.

2. Don’t expose them directly to liquids – Rigorously avoiding direct contact with water is necessary as any amount of liquid entering inside the chamber compromises internal circuitry leading to inaccurate strain gauge compositions meaning wrong summarized outputs.

3. Avoid sudden changes in temperature- Sudden changes in temperature can cause expansion problems within strain gauges resulting in erroneous data outputs depending on application requirements

Overall load cell care such as taking proper precautionary measures when dealing with loading sensors is important for optimal performance over the long run. This includes monitoring their environment carefully, applying preventive maintenance routinely as well performing regular checkups before putting them into service for specific applications reliably without compromising accuracy against tight tolerances over time effectively and efficiently.

Therefore, choosing a professional service provider who can deliver a strong after sales support & service will be crucial when you are facing a breakdown. As you do not want your weigh bridge/ truck scale to be idle for long, before you resume the operation. Service provider will provide a proper care and regular checks, businesses can count on continuous measuring accuracy from these essential devices.

** NMIM Pattern Approval is an essential factor if your business is in Malaysia.
